picture vampire, gallery novemberrTheme: Antibiotica-resistant bacteria can be spread by washing machines. Hygienists at the University of Bonn has been proven for a children's hospital that a Klebsiella oxytoca type was transmitted to newborns by a conventional washing machine. It was used to launder the clothes - hand-knitted socks and beanies - of the babies. The bacterium was passed on to the them via clothing. The Klebsiella oxytoca type was identified in the detergent drawer and on the doort seal of the washing machine. Fortunately no dangerous infection occured. The case draw attention because many people needing nursing care are living in private households. The results are published in the journal "Applied and Enviromental Microbiology".
The researchers suggest to draw attention to possible problems with resistent bacteria as the number of people receiving nursing care from family members is constantly rising. The consequences for domestic enviroments: In households with elder people requiring nursing care or bladder catheters or younger people with open wounds, suppurating injuries or with infections - laundry should be washed at higher temperatures, such as 60° (140°F) to avoid transmission of dangerous pathogens.
Information: The Institute for Hygiene and Public Health would like to investigate this transmission path even more closely. The scientists are therefore looking for households with persons who have previously been placed in in-patient isolation due to colonization with multi-resistant pathogens and who are interested in participating in a study on the transmission of antibiotic-resistant bacteria via washing machines.
